Steering Committee for Preparation for Earthquakes

 

The Steering Committee for Preparation for Earthquakes was established in 1999 and serves as the headquarters factor of the ministers committee for this and as a coordinating factor on its behalf between all of the government ministries, the other governmental bodies and the civil organizations respectively.

 

According to the decision of the government the steering committee deals with the entire preparation issue for earthquakes including determining the responsibility and authority to deal with this matter, including all of its aspects.

 

The committee focuses its work inter alia on the following issues: 

  • Determining responsibility and division of authority.
  • Risk surveys and completing the information and mapping arrangement.
  • Defining and supervising building standards required against earthquakes.
  • Enforcing building standards.
  • Determining preferences for dealing with known areas.
  • Handling methods of buildings and installations which are under risk.
  • Initiating legislation in required subject.
  • Preparing training arrangements for the public and preparing notification arrangements for the public for emergency situations.
  • Drawing conclusions from similar events in the world.
